How does the doctoral program work? Is there a doctoral school?

As at most other German universities, the doctoral program in Wuppertal runs according to the traditional, individual doctoral model and not according to a structured program. Doctoral students are employed as junior researchers in a research group and are not considered students of a graduate school who have to take courses. Thus, they contribute to both the research and the teaching of the department and receive an appropriate salary for this according to the salary level for civil servants.

How do I apply for a doctoral position?

Since doctoral students, unlike undergraduates, are salaried employees, the application process follows the usual regulations for personnel recruitment at the University of Wuppertal. Each position advertised under the doctoral position tab contains information on the application process and the required application documents. There is no central admissions office; decisions regarding employment as a doctoral student are made by the hiring chair.
