Computer Science at the University of Wuppertal

PhD positions

Are you interested in research and have an M.Sc. or equivalent degree from a university? Then you might be interested in our PhD opportunities. Unlike many other universities outside Europe, there is no doctoral school for which you can apply. In Wuppertal, doctoral students are more like research assistants who are employed by a specific department and support teaching activities in addition to their research. Doctoral students thus receive a salary and also social benefits. You are therefore welcome to apply for one of the open PhD positions that matches your interests. Some of the open positions can be found below. However, you may also contact one of the faculty members at any time for information about additional opportunities and possible fellowship programs.

Promotion process

In principle, admission to the doctoral program requires the successful completion of a degree, usually M.Sc., from an accredited university. However, the exact regulations depend on the faculty in which you are employed. During your time as a doctoral student, you will participate in research projects, support teaching activities at your department, and develop your own research profile together with your supervising professor. Upon completion of your dissertation, you may apply to open the doctoral program. An independent committee evaluates your dissertation and you must subsequently defend your work. Although not required, it is common for doctoral students to publish their results regularly in scientific conferences and journals before the dissertation is submitted.
