What is the model for the doctoral studies? Is there a PhD school?

Like most German universities, the University of Wuppertal follows the traditional, individual doctorate model rather than a structured program. Doctoral candidates are thus employed as junior researchers within a research group rather than being considered students of a graduate school that need to take courses. Doctoral candidates contribute both to research and teaching at the employing group and receive a salary according to the standard salary grade of public servants.

How can I apply for a PhD position?

Since doctoral candidates are employees rather than students, the application process follows the standard human resources regulations at the University of Wuppertal. Each position listed on the PhD positions page includes details about the application process, and the documents that you will need to submit. There is no central admissions office and the decision about the employment as a doctoral candidate is made by the hiring Chair.
